Tips for Choosing the Right Housing Option When You Head Off to College
April 26, 2022
Heading to college is an exciting time, you are venturing out on your own, most likely for the first time. That newfound independence is coupled with expectations about your education and grades. The type of housing you will pursue is one of the most important decisions you will make throughout the planning process. Use the following tips to unpack your choices and find the one that best fits your personality, budget, and goals.
The amount of privacy you can reasonably expect in a college dorm will vary depending on how it is set up. FOr example, you may get a shared room with community public areas, or you could be placed in a more private, apartment-style unit. No matter which one your school uses, however, your activities will be supervised by RAs and staff. A private apartment can minimize some of that intrusion; however, you might have to find a roommate to reduce the overall cost.
One huge advantage that dorms have over private apartments is that they are located on campus. That means you can walk or bike to classes without worrying about dealing with local traffic. However, many student housing is designed with this convenience in mind, so that you can easily find walking distance housing to UNCC and other popular schools.
Depending on your personal situation, this may play a large or small role in selecting your ideal student housing. Institutional financial aid or scholarships can usually be used for on-campus housing but may be limited to off-campus use. On the other hand, it is often more affordable to rent a shared apartment with a kitchen where you can get out from under campus meal plans.
There are many things to consider when deciding whether to live on or off-campus. Understanding your budget, how close you want to be to campus and personal privacy and independence preferences can help you make an informed choice.
